Calling a theme the best WordPress theme ever is high praise indeed.

If you want a theme that can be anything you want it to be, without having to touch a line of code – this is definitely for you!

I’ve been busy changing all my sites over to this theme – PageLines Platform Pro. That’s how impressed I am!

If you’re a WordPress user, you’ll know that many business sites, including the sites of many top companies, are built on WordPress.

It is quite simply, an amazing content management system.

You can change page layouts and colours with a few clicks!

Anyone who has spent hours chasing their tail in theme files even just to change simple things such as colours and header size is going to love this.

Custom Post Types

Platform Pro uses Custom Post Types.

This means Features, Boxes, Banners, Callouts, Carousels and more – are all integrated into the theme and ready for you to use in any way you wish.

Create stunning business layouts or creative personal sites.

Freedom to build any layout you want – on different pages

You are not restricted to columns. Some do-it-yourself WordPress themes allow you to have a one, two or three column layout – but that’s it. (Everything has to remain within the columns.)

With Platform Pro , you can create any combination of layouts. You are not restricted to keeping elements within columns.

Create different layouts for your home page, your blog pages, your About page – or any page.

You want to create a magazine theme? No problem? You can have as many content areas pulling in posts from different categories as you like!

Whether the site you want is an online magazine, business website, business blog, photographers gallery or personal wesbite– this theme can do it all.

Easy to implement

I put together a brand new website in an hour. It’s up and running, and open for business. It still needs some more content entered – but it’s complete enough to send clients to.

Creating a new site is one thing. Changing over established sites is a bit more fiddly. But I know that when I’m done – my WordPress theme will be able to change and flex with me.

I’ve looked at hundreds of themes – there are many beautiful ones, but none had the exact layout I wanted.

Also, each of my sites has very different needs– and finding a different theme for each (and then finding yet another new theme each time the website changes or expands)– drives me crazy!

One last word

If you’re a beginner to WordPress and WordPress themes, you are likely to have to spend some time learning before getting a handle on how everything works.

And Platform Pro uses some amazing features on top on the fantastic capabilities of WordPress. – so there’s much to learn.

It’s also not possible for a theme to do absolutely everything. Some things may require customisation. If you wanted to place animation in your background for example, you would require some custom code.

But for the majority of layouts, even highly creative layouts, this theme is all you need.

Too many business blogs sit there not doing anything special.

If these blogs were on a menu at a restaurant, the restaurant would soon be out of business.

The meals would be bland in flavour and unsatisfying, and there would be no dessert on offer. The seating arrangements would be set up to suit the restaurant, with no thought to your comfort or needs.

If you were a diner at this restaurant, you wouldn’t return!

What kind of blogs are we talking about?

We’ve all seen business blogs with five or six posts that were written a year ago.

Or blogs with a trickle of half-hearted posts that read as though the owner has little interest in their blog.

Worse, those same posts were all promoting the business itself.

There’s nothing to keep visitors reading or engaged, and there’s nothing to there to help them in any way.

How can I make my blog more appealing?

Good design

A well-designed blog will have clear navigation and an appealing, fresh look.

But you don’t have to have the shiniest blog on the block. Your content is far more important.

Good incentives

Free stuff always works well :) You could offer people a free e-book, a sample or a discount that is only available through your blog.

Having your best content easily accessible on the homepage helps. (You might be able to do this through a ‘Most popular articles’ plugin or widget for example.)

Having a lot of good content also helps– people won’t be able to read it all at one sitting, but they will bookmark and return at a later point.

Solve a problem

If a visitor arrived at your blog from a search engine, they might be looking for something very specific.

If you can provide the information the visitor is seeking, the visitor will be interested in your blog.

You could even offer a set of tutorials or simple how-to’s.

Entertain

Keeping people entertained is difficult. People are incredibly busy. And if the content at your blog just talks about your business, a visitor will not hang around for long!

If your blog concerns certain products, beautiful photographs of them are helpful and are infinitely better than just talking about a product.

It’s best to keep your blog focused on a topic (even if loosely) – but it’s a good idea to break out every so often and entertain with something amusing.

At the blog of EP Designs, owner Elena Perotta posts gorgeous photos of her timeless ‘recreated treasures’, business tips, and also posts her wonderful ‘Chocolate moments’ regularly.

Many of us can relate to a love of all things chocolate:

I don’t understand why so many “so called” chocolate lovers complain about the calories in chocolate, when all true chocoholics know that it is a vegetable. It comes from the cocoa bean, beans are veggies, ’nuff said.

Put “eat chocolate” at the top of your list of things to do today. That way, at least you’ll get one thing done

The Business Mums Network Blog Awards last month also shows examples of business blogs that offer extra value for readers.

Jazzing up your business blog shouldn’t take time away from your business. Start by adding just one thing a week.

It won’t be long before you’ve built up something tasty!

Internet marketing - a lesson in going viral.

Internet marketing – a lesson in going viral

I chanced upon a mention of a free marketing course today at the Your Cheeky Monkey blog. It’s called the Brain Alchemy Masterclass at psychotactics.com.

This course is being sold on the site for $2500, but for the moment is free – by invitation only.

(If you’re a subscriber to this site and received this via email or RSS – consider yourself invited! )

Once filling out your name and email address, you are asked to invite others via email – and at completion of the course you asked to post a public review.

For the moment – here is a little review of the actual marketing strategy behind the course!

The Brain Alchemy Masterclass is interesting because it is a marketing business marketing their business.

Sean D’Souza, the owner of Psychotactics, is a New Zealand marketing consultant who conducts workshops and seminars.

He hopes to build a non-profit university in New Zealand to help people in business, and his goal is to ‘make most Psychotactics products and workshops free by the year 2020.’

But what we are focusing on today are the strategies that are being used to publicise the Brain Alchemy Masterclass.

About the course, Sean says:

The Brain Alchemy Masterclass is the structure that you need to build your business upon.

It’s about tactics and strategy that will form the very core of your business, no matter whether you’re just starting up, or have been in business ‘forever.’

With the Brain Alchemy Masterclass, Sean has created a product that:

is valuable

can help your business

is available for a limited time

is available only via invitation

has no up-sell or cross-sell attached to it

is free

These are compelling reasons to sign up, wouldn’t you agree?

Additionally:

the invitation might well have come from a friend or someone you trust.

You are put on a ‘waiting list’ before you recieve the information

Social persuasion is known for its power, and having someone you know invite you makes you at least stop and take a look.

(For a marketer, it’s also a way of getting your message into people’s inboxes, without spamming. Clever?)

And knowing that there is a ‘waiting list’ creates a sense that this product is in demand– other people want this product and are willing to go a waiting list to receive it.

Again, social persuasion.

After signing up, Sean asks that you:

invite others

write a review (good, bad or ugly) at the end of the course.

This achieves a few different things. You’ll now have promotion of your product appearing on websites around the web.

Positive reviews, of course, are the best possible scenario.

But even not-so-positive reviews are still providing valuable links to your website.

(And if your product is good, the possibility of negative reviews is limited.)

A lesson in itself

The Brain Alchemy Masterclass strategy to gain subscribers is a lesson in itself.

Because of the way the campaign is set up, the amount of subscribers to the course will grow exponentially.

If Sean D’Souza had just advertised his marketing course on his website, without a promotion strategy – many people may well sign up, but the chance of the whole thing going ‘viral’ is practically non-existent.

A campaign that just sits on your website and doesn’t work for you isn’t much of a campaign.

It might be worth it to you and your business to take a leaf from Sean’s marketing strategy.

Was I invited into the course? No, actually I just crashed the party.

The chance to chat about a great internet marketing strategy was too good to pass up.

Your unique selling proposition doesn’t have to be an exclusive product or service, as it turns out.

Every business should have a unique selling proposition (USP) but it doesn’t have to come down to a single product or service that no one else has.

For a micro-business, unless you have a never-before-seen product or service, your uniqueness comes from the blend of YOU and the way in which you package, present or position your business.

It’s not enough to simply offer ‘great customer service’ or ‘commitment to quality products’.

These things are great (and essential) but because almost everyone offers these things (or claims to offer these things) they don’t stand out in the consumer’s mind.

Of course, it’s best if your USP is concretely different – such as Domino’s Pizza’s, “You get fresh, hot pizza delivered to your door in 30 minutes or less – or it’s free”.

But it could be that your product itself has no radically different attribute – but something about how it is presented, or something that your company does, that makes it stand out.
Toms sells comfortable shoes for men and women and children. Toms gives a pair of new shoes to a child in need every time you buy a pair. They’be also started selling eyewear – and for every pair of sunglasses or eyewear your buy – Toms gives the gift of sight to a person in need (eye surgery, treatment or prescription glasses)
That kind of USP is better than a ‘selling point’. It’s creating awareness and helping to being about a fairer world community.

Companies with great USPs

M&Ms chocolate and Coca Cola are often given as prime examples of businesses having great USPs.

M&Ms: The chocolate melts in your mouth, not in your hands.

Coca cola: It’s the real thing.

Yet M&Ms were not the first company to produce a small flat chocolate disc encased in a coloured sugar coating.

Smarties had already done it, years earlier. M&Ms were the first to put it into succintly into a slogan. So it was not actually unique and was not something that no one else could copy (because it was already being done.).

The only thing ‘real’ about Coca Cola is that it is indeed, the brand of cola known as Coca Cola.

But the term, ‘the real thing’ sets up an expectation in consumers’ mind that this product is genuine and trustworthy.

The term also has a grassroots coolness about it.

Together with the marketing campaigns, ‘the real thing’ also projects an image of youth. It identifies itself with the vigour and excitement of youth culture.

Ads for Coca Cola in 2009

These are a couple of examples of how Coca-Cola is promoting its products during 2009:

Diet Coca-Cola:

Is being heavily marketed to women.

We have ads showing on Australia television promoting this type of Coca-Cola as a fashion statement – at least, as being the shape of a women in a ‘little black dress’.

Named ‘Diet Cola – The little black dress‘ - a fashion show kicked off the promotion, featuring little black dresses created by top Australian and international designers.

Zero Coca-Cola

Is being marketed to youth.

The latest ad for Coke Zero on Australian television rolls through like an action-packed movie clip.

The lead male puts himself through a quick series of impossibly high-risk manoeuvres, and still manages to impress the girl.

Branding your business

Your USP, being the thing that sticks in consumers minds, is part of your brand.

Clever Streak, a content-writing business, has recently been rethinking their brand.

On the Clever Streak blog, owner Anne Maybus was pondering what it takes to capture the hearts of consumers and clients.

Anne found this great quote to sum up what it’s all about:

“What”s a brand? A singular idea or concept that you own inside the mind of the prospect.” – Al Ries

This is a thought-provoking statement, because it takes focus away from what you might want your brand to be, and places focus on what your customers or clients want to see represented in your brand.

When shopping for an item or service, customers want to know what the benefit is to them in buying from you.

The online dilemma

Online, you can reach buyers that you could not have reached before without expensive advertising campaigns.

But of course, it goes both ways.

Buyers also have more reach – theyoften have the choice of dozens or even hundreds of businesses to buy from when looking for a particular product or service.

What makes you stand out?

What can buyers gain from you that they can’t get anywhere else?

What will buyers remember you by?

When they describe your business to their friends, what phrases will they use?

Can you sum up your business in ten or less words?

Can you sum up your business in ten or less compelling words that contain something unique about your business and that identify your brand?

Writer Susan Wise recently attended ‘The Festival of Dangerous Ideas’ at the Sydney Opera house.

From Germaine Greer to Judith Lucy, it was an eclectic mix of imaginings, left-of-centre concepts and entertainment.

Susan ponders over the disparate cultures of creative thought and football being celebrated on the same cold, rainy Sunday.

It’s a cold, wet wintry Rugby League grand final day in Sydney, but not all Sydneysiders are snuggling up in front of the television for the big event.

At the Sydney Opera House crowds are amassing, and the same electric atmosphere that is present in the football stadium also fills this iconic Sydney venue as hundreds of people gather at Sydney’s Festival of Dangerous Ideas to champion their intellectual heroes rather than their sporting ones.

Germaine Greer calls for freedom

As the rugby league players flex their brawn for today’s final battle, Germaine Greer flexes her grey matter for her continual battle for freedom; for her the most dangerous idea of all.

The large Concert Hall is filled to capacity and there is a tangible feeling of excitement in the air as we anticipate witnessing this self-confessed ‘living legend’.

I was not disappointed. We consider our fundamental rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and what this means in reality.

As Greer points out, romanticised ideas of the noble savage untainted by modernity are not something that ever existed in reality, but something that should be aspired to in the future.

Being an idealist more than a realist I reassure myself that just because we live in a world with many problems doesn’t mean that we must ‘get real’ and accept the way it is; we are free to change the way we think, the way we act, and what we aspire to.

I enjoyed every controversial minute of Greer’s hardcore but humorous presentation. Highly opinionated yet very personable, Germaine Greer packs a powerful punch.

Capitalism versus Socialism

The next dangerous idea was a critique of our capitalist society as we were asked whether people with flat screen TVs should be complaining about capitalism.

I knew this one would get me going, and it did. The two panel speakers were both pro-capitalism so I enjoyed myself find holes and counter arguments to their defence.

There was heavy use of the failed socialist system to make capitalism look good by comparison, and a lot of talk about the superior standards of living in a capitalist society.

This may be true if you equate luxury materialism and advanced technology with ‘better’ lives. We are certainly becoming more affluent, but are we any happier?

Or does the pressure to keep up on the treadmill of ever increasing production and consumption take over our lives, leaving little time for the things that are really important to us – relationships, personal goals, and our health?

It seems as though the structure which can make us rich enough to buy books doesn’t leave us any time to read them!

Taking the criminal side out of drug addiction

The ideas got more dangerous as the concept of legalising drugs was floated.

This is where I found the festival would do more than just ignite my passions and ideals, as I actually started to change some of my previously held beliefs, seeing things from a different perspective.

Tending toward a ‘no tolerance’ approach to the war on drugs, I was surprised to find my attitude changing as I learned more about the failure of this approach and the significant negative side effects that come with prohibition.

The idea to view the problem as a social/health issue rather than a criminal one seemed sensible to me, with education being the cornerstone of future strategies.

I would hope that by identifying why people take drugs and addressing this initially, a prevention rather than cure outcome would ensue, resulting in a better society all round.

Utopian lives spent in a ‘soma-tose’ state

I’m now reminded that my ideas are often more utopian than dangerous, but found myself being just a little scared at the dangerous utopian ideas put forward by an Oxford University professor of ethics.

Apparently scientists have estimated that humanity has a 50% probability of extinction within the next century.

The failings of human nature such as un-cooperativeness and greedy self-interest have set us on a path towards our own self-destruction.

Our biological hard-wiring is still in the dark ages, whilst our intellectual capacity for technology has advanced with leaps and bounds, meaning we don’t always have the moral standards to reign in the potentialities, good and bad, that our new technologies present.

The case was put forward to change human behaviour by artificially manipulating our biology. Higher levels of surveillance and scientific intervention of individuals was promoted so we could ‘breed out’ undesirable genes.

It started to smell like 1984 to me, and I decided I would rather take my chances with the good, the bad, and the ugly that is our world, than live in a Brave New World where our utopian lives are spent in a ‘Soma-tose’ state.

Genetic modification of human beings and a Nazi-like desire to create a perfect race felt like a bad, and dangerous, idea to me.

Nude Jude bounded onstage

As you can imagine, a day filled with intense, radical, stimulating, and yes, even dangerous ideas needed to be finished on a lighter, less serious note.

And who could you take less seriously than our lovely comedian Judith Lucy, who gleefully bounded onto stage dressed in a flesh coloured bodysuit, her breasts accentuated with black outline and a bold triangle of pubic hair proudly textered onto the appropriate spot.

Hardly appropriate attire for one’s gig at the Opera House one might think, but oh so amusing. ‘Nude Jude’ and a line up of other entertainers brought some light relief to a crowd of thinkers happy to get out of their heads and enjoy a belly laugh instead.

Ideas and aspirations

A Festival of Ideas – who would have thought we’d get such a huge, enthusiastic turnout? Particularly with the exorbitant ticket prices the Opera House was charging, and a rainy day to boot!

So there are people who cherish ideas and creativity, who are not prepared to accept the status quo, and who are committed to their ideals and values. I was encouraged.

As I departed Sydney Harbour after the event, I noticed rows of blue and yellow streamers, remnants of somebody’s different reality of this wet, wintry Sunday, and I made the comparison of the day’s two very different, yet very similar events.

Whilst I don’t think there’s anything wrong with enjoying sport as a leisure pastime, I wonder if some of the significant time and energy that our culture invests in this might be well spent engaged in thinking. About our lives, our values, and what type of society we aspire to be in the future.

I can safely guess which event will get the most media coverage and general public discussion. At work this week will we all be talking about Sunday’s celebration of ‘brains’ or its celebration of ‘brawn’?

Many people keep an inspiration close to their heart, but don't take the steps necessary to follow through to a conclusion.

Why don't people follow their hearts more often?

Whether it’s starting a business, writing a book or taking on a completely new lifestyle– building something up from nothing takes a solid commitment.

It’s true that many people keep an inspiration close to their hearts, but don’t take the steps necessary to follow through to a conclusion.

Why don’t people take those steps?

Life gets in the way

Other people say it can’t be done

It’s too difficult to raise the capital

Fear of failure

Dislike of change

The dream would take too many weeks, months or years to accomplish.

People like me don’t do things like that

I’m not smart enough

The vision is too big, and therefore too frightening to think about

The vision is too small, and therefore not worth it

Any of these things can be reasons for not following a passion.

But remember, every single one of the above reasons grows wobbly legs when looking at what others have achieved, even against seemingly impossible odds.

Getting help when needed

Some people have vision, but not a grasp on the practicalities of realising the vision– and become discouraged.

Some people are great at details and tasks, but have trouble gaining a view of the big picture.

If this is you, you can:

ask yourself what you need to do to take things to the next step

gain advice on taking things further

partner with those people who have the abilities to propel your vision further

do nothing, but repeat often “I’d really like to do that!”

All of these are valid choices, but of course the last one is unlikely to be satisfying in any way!

Cate Bolt and Project 18.

Many Australian business women who use Twitter will be familiar with Cate Bolt, a business owner and mother of a large family who is currently engaged in promoting and raising funds for a vision close to her heart. We published an article on Cate and her vision, project 18, in August.

This month, Cate was interviewed at Cherry Magazine. Cate continues to take matters on with both hands, forging new paths and inspiring a team of volunteers and professionals who can help bring Project 18 to fulfilment.

It’s this kind of passion that gets things done.

Sometime (probably often) passion comes to ‘push’.

It’s not easy to keep pushing yourself when things seem hopeless or when obstacles loom too large– or when you’re just plain exhausted!

That’s when surrounding yourself with like-minded people and supporters can help you through.

If you’re not following your heart, what are you following?

Tania Menzies started her Jelli Beanz childcare business at just 19 years of age.

By age 24, Tania was inspired to start a new, deeply rewarding side to Jelli Beanz.

For the past eight years, I have devoted myself to improving the standards and services of childcare available to parents in Australia.

Launching my own childcare business Jelli Beanz at the age of 19 was a personal and professional challenge.

But today I lead a flagship of qualified childcare workers who not only provide high quality babysitting, nannying, au pair and respite care services throughout New South Wales and Western Australia, but also a not-for-profit arm to assist parents undergoing treatment for cancer.

Starting my own business was not an easy path

After volunteering in orphanages and schools in Thailand in my late teens, my return to Australia filled me with a new passion and understanding about what it was that gave me satisfaction as well as ideas about how I could have a positive impact through my childcare endeavours on home soil.

Though I had much expertise working in the childcare industry, I’d had none as a small business owner and as great an accomplishment as it was, setting up my business Jelli Beanz proved no easy feat.

I am the first to admit that running your own business isn’t always the easiest of career paths but my passion and motivation for providing quality child care is unwavering.

All business plans were put on hold

However in 2007, I faced a professional and personal challenge. We had been in negotiations to set up Jelli Beanz in Melbourne with my Godmother as my business partner. My Godmother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, and all business plans got put on hold.

While accompanying my Godmother to the hospital for her cancer treatments, I saw firsthand the need for parents undergoing cancer treatment to have access to compassionate child care services.

Encouraged and inspired by my Godmother, I founded the Jelli Beanz Community Volunteers and the Caring For Kids During Cancer service to provide free child care services and assistance for children of parents undergoing active cancer treatment. The service has been funded by the Cancer Council for the past two years and we are now actively seeking sponsorship in order to continue this vital service to the community.

My advice to all young, professional women: when you get lemons – make lemonade!

Narveen Kaur operates Daily Essence - Beauty & Lifestyle.

Her decision to go Carbon Neutral is an Australian business environmental first.

Narveen Kaur operates ‘Daily Essence’– Beauty & Lifestyle. dailybathandbody.com and dailypilates.com.au.

Her decision to go Carbon Neutral is an Australian business environmental first.

My business, Daily Essence, is now the only beauty and lifestyle brand in Australia to be awarded CarbonNeutral® certification by reducing its carbon footprint to net zero. This means that our consumers can feel good in the knowledge that Daily Essence is leaving a significantly minimal carbon footprint.

I wanted to make a difference in my own way and where better to start than with my own business, Daily Essence? I knew it was going to be a personal and business challenge but it was also going to be rewarding in the knowledge that I had achieved something no other Australian beauty brand had done.

To achieve the CarbonNeutral® status, Daily Essence had to prove the positive action it is taking to tackle climate change by completing an assessment with The CarbonNeutral Company.

Our Green House emissions were measured

The Green House Gas emissions that were measured included: how staff travelled to and from work, the electricity used both in production of the goods and in the offices, the amount of waste, the amount of printing, and suppliers that were used, such as freight.

As you can imagine this was difficult and time-consuming but well worth the effort. Daily Essence was then accredited CarbonNeutral® status when the CO2 emissions had been reduced to net zero in accordance with an international standard, known as the CarbonNeutral® Protocol. This was a long process but one we all worked hard to achieve. I knew that if we could do it then it would help encourage other Australian businesses to do the same.

The latest scientific opinion is that to achieve a positive level of environmental sustainability, global Green House Gases reductions of 80% are necessary within the next 50 years. This is a very significant challenge, especially in the context of growing emissions from developing countries and the affect this has on the environment.

Around the world, people and businesses are taking voluntary steps to cut their Carbon Dioxide (CO2) gas emissions. To emphasise the importance of a reduction in CO2, state, national and international governments have set and agreed on binding Green House Gas reduction targets at numerous levels.
